What Is Hydronic Radiant Floor Heating?
Radiant heating systems deliver heat directly through a surface. Those surfaces can be ceilings, walls, or floors, although radiant floor heating tends to be the more popular approach. Heat rises, so having the heat come up through the floor provides the living space with better coverage. There are several different core types of radiant floor heating systems including air-heated, electric, and hydronic.
Air-heated systems are generally not practical for homes and even most commercial applications. Electric systems are practical but are not cost-effective in most scenarios. Hydronic systems, which send hot water through piping to radiant floor panels, are cost-effective over the long term and provide great comfort as well.
Radiant Floor Heating Benefits
As the costs associated with hydronic radiant floor heating installation continue to go down, popularity of the technology continues to increase. That is due to the many benefits that radiant floor heating provides. Radiant floor heating gives you warm floors and feels warmer overall to most people than other heating types. These systems are highly efficient, and those savings help to offset the upfront costs over the long term. Due to the panel-based infrastructure, these systems offer zone control. Radiant floor heating does not make noise, and since there is no forced air moving dust throughout your home, indoor air quality tends to be better and no air filters are needed.

How Hydronic Radiant Floor Heating Is Installed
There are two approaches to hydronic radiant floor heating installation: wet and dry. Wet installation involves the radiant tubing being placed in a concrete slab. Dry installations are a more recent innovation and allow for the tubing to be placed in the air space between the floor and subfloor. In either case, PEX tubing is used to provide radiant heat. That radiant tubing is connected to a circulating pump that moves the heated and cooled water. Water is heated via either a boiler or water heater, which in some cases can be the same water heater that provides hot water throughout your entire home. The system will also have a thermostat, and it is often possible to adjust it on a room-by-room basis.
